HISTORY
Since 1996, the Urban Ministry Center has partnered with colleges and congregations of many faiths to open their facilities to provide shelter and food for homeless people during the winter months. Each site offers a warm, safe place to sleep, serves three meals (dinner, breakfast and bag lunch) and then returns guests the following morning to uptown Charlotte.
The program is a unique way for people of faith to become directly involved with people who are homeless. The simple goal is to keep homeless people from freezing on cold winter nights. A greater goal is to provide a more personal relationship to homeless people, at least for a night, and a deeper understanding of the depth and complexity of the issue.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Light of Christ volunteers partnered with Harrison United Methodist Church to care for our homeless neighbors by providing a safe, warm place to sleep, three meals (dinner, breakfast and a brown bag lunch), hospitality and prayer during the cold winter months.

The Habitat for Humanity model first began in Americus, Georgia in 1976 through the innovative vision of Millard Fuller and wife, Linda. Today, Habitat has built more than 250,000 homes around the world, providing more than one million people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter.
Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte began in 1983 through the committed service and vision of seven area churches. Observing a dire need for adequate, affordable housing for the areas low-income families, the churches created a non-profit group. The group, modeled after Habitat for Humanity in Americus, was dedicated to building and financing homes that low-income residents could afford through zero-interest, no profit mortgages.
Since 1983, our affiliate has been enabling working-class families to help themselves become homeowners. To date, over 800 families have been able to realize their dream of homeownership.
Light of Christ partners with Habitat for Humanity six times each year.
